Josef-Schwarz School, Heilbronn

Temporary schoolyard

For the temporary campus of the Josef-Schwarz School on the Heilbronn Education Campus, we transformed the outdoor areas into a flexible and child-friendly schoolyard. The design was developed as a high-quality and economical interim solution tailored to the requirements of everyday school life and the temporary use of the site.

The paved areas were constructed using permeable concrete, while much of the existing tree stock – including the distinctive birch trees – was retained. Leaf-shaped tree grates frame the trees and are planted with robust, two-toned ornamental grasses. The design combines functional requirements with a clear visual identity and allows the outdoor areas to be adapted again once the temporary use comes to an end.

Stormwater management was integrated into the site design from the outset. Through coordinated grading and the use of water-permeable surfaces, rainwater can infiltrate within the outdoor areas, avoiding the need for an additional conventional drainage system.

The redesigned schoolyard offers elementary school students a varied range of opportunities for play, movement and interaction. Interactive play panels, ground games, trampolines and a carousel create a diverse and engaging outdoor environment for breaks and everyday school activities.
