Creating space for childcare

On the U.S. military base Patch Barracks in Stuttgart-Vaihingen, a former bar is being transformed into a modern child care facility for two age groups. We are responsible for the design and phased implementation of the new outdoor areas for the Child Development Center.
Nine group rooms are directly connected to the expansive outdoor play areas, which are being built in multiple phases. In the initial phase, we constructed all primary access routes to the building. This included a new barrier-free ramp and stairway on the south side, as well as an ADA-compliant main entrance. Emergency exits on the east and north sides were also added, along with a complete redesign of the entrance area—including gate systems, contact loops, and security bollards.

At the heart of the design are safe, age-appropriate play zones featuring colorful, permeable fall-protection surfacing and a perimeter tricycle track made of concrete pavers. Shaded play equipment, sun sails, and secure enclosures ensure a high-quality and safe play experience. The area is enclosed by a two-meter-high metal mesh fence with child-friendly access gates. New drainage systems connect to the existing sewer infrastructure, and newly planted lawns along with tree protection and ecological compensation measures ensure the project’s environmental quality. The result is a safe, engaging space for learning and play.
